How clumping cat litter works

Clumping cat litter binds liquid into firm, cohesive clumps the moment the cat urinates. Instead of the urine seeping down and spreading throughout the tray, it is kept together in one spot that you can scoop out with a cat litter scoop. The same goes for faeces. The advantage is practical: you remove only the dirty parts and leave the rest of the litter in place. That means you do not have to empty the whole tray every time the cat has used it, and consumption is lower than if you discard all the litter several times a week. This is the mechanism that sets clumping litter apart from non-clumping types, where the liquid is bound throughout the whole layer and the entire tray has to be changed more often.

Bentonite or plant-based litter

The two most common types of clumping cat litter are bentonite and plant-based litter. Bentonite is a natural clay mineral that absorbs large amounts of liquid and forms hard, firm clumps that are easy to lift out whole without falling apart. Plant-based litter is made from materials such as soy, corn, wheat or wood and also clumps, but is typically lighter in weight and biodegradable. In canada litter you will find both principles: CANADA LITTER MULTICAT, 18KG and CANADA LITTER CLUMPING Baby, 8 / 12KG are mineral-based clumping litter, while Noba Soy Ultra Clumping Litter, 10L is made from soy. The choice mainly comes down to what you prioritise: hard clumping ability and a low price per kilo favour bentonite, while light weight and biodegradable material favour the plant-based one.

Several cats in the same tray

When several cats share a tray, it gets used up faster, and the demands on clumping ability and odour binding increase. Here a variant designed for exactly that is a real advantage, because it is formulated to handle more urine and more clumps between cleanings. CANADA LITTER MULTICAT, 18KG is made for households with more than one cat, and the large bag size means fewer purchases when consumption is high. As a rule of thumb, one tray per cat plus one extra is recommended, no matter how well the litter clumps, because cats are reluctant to share a toilet.

How clumping litter keeps the tray odour-free for longer

Odour from the litter tray arises when urine and faeces start to break down. Because clumping litter encapsulates the urine in a sealed clump instead of letting it spread, the source of the odour becomes easier to remove, as long as you scoop daily. Many clumping types are also formulated to actively bind odour between cleanings. The most important factor for a fresh tray, however, is not the product alone, but the routine: if you remove the clumps every day and top up with clean litter, the tray stays odour-free far longer than if the clumps are left to sit.

How often should clumping cat litter be completely replaced?

Because you continuously remove the dirty clumps and top up with new litter, you do not need to empty the tray completely as often as with non-clumping litter. How often the full replacement should happen depends on how many cats use the tray, how large it is, and how consistently you scoop. A typical routine is to scoop daily and empty the tray completely, wash it and fill it with clean litter every few weeks. If you want to dive deeper into the intervals, we have gathered it in the guide how often should you change cat litter. If the litter starts to smell even after you have removed the clumps, or the clumps form less well than before, it is a sign that it is time for a full replacement.

Can clumping cat litter be flushed down the toilet?

Mineral-based cat litter such as bentonite must never be flushed down the toilet. The clay absorbs water and expands, so it can get stuck and block drains and pipes. It belongs in the residual waste. Some plant-based types are marketed as flushable, but even here you should be careful: drainage and sewer systems do not always handle it without problems, and in many places it is advised against entirely. The safe solution for all types of litter is to scoop the clumps into a bag and dispose of them with the household waste. You can read more about that in what to do with used cat litter. If you are in doubt about a specific plant-based type, always follow the instructions on the packaging rather than guessing.

Dust and everyday handling

The amount of dust is worth looking at, both for the cat digging close to the litter and for you when you top up and scoop. Low-dust litter stirs up less when poured into the tray and leaves less to wipe up around it. Here lighter, plant-based types often have an advantage in weight and handling, while mineral litter on the other hand forms the hardest clumps. If you are considering the overall setup around the tray, you will find scoops and accessories under cat accessories, and a full overview of the range for your cat is available under cat litter.
